BAR/BAT MITZVAH PROGRAM
The highlight of the year for our children
There is probably no more significant event in the life of a Jewish child than his or her Bar/ Bat Mitzvah. Most children are privileged to celebrate in the midst of their caring and loving families. For others, that is just a dream. For many of the children growing up at the Emunah Children’s Centre in Afula, celebrating their Bar or Bat Mitzvah at home is not possible, due to their family circumstances and financial restraints. But they are still able to enjoy a meaningful and “leibedike” celebration with their families. Every year, in the spring or early summer, the Centre holds a spectacular communal Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebration for some 15-25 bnai and bnot mitzvah who have come of age.
On the special day the Centre takes on a festive atmosphere. The campus is decorated and hundreds of chairs and round tables are set up for the Bar/Bat Mitzvah banquet. Each of the Bnai and Bnot Mitzvah has invited 10-15 members of their families and they receive them, proudly dressed in their new outfits purchased for them by the Emunah Centre. On display near the entrance are special family albums made by the children and their counselors. The evening is electrifying, with everybody dancing, eating, drinking, and having a good time. The evening climaxes with the introduction of the Bnai and Bnot Mitzvah and a colourful show—a musical, performed by many of the children at the Centre including the Emunotes Choir. Many a tear of joy and excitement is shed during the evening.
However, the Bar and Bat Mitzvah doesn’t start and end at this special event. During the months before the Bnai and Bnot Mitzvah, our children begin their journey by studying the basic tenets of living an adult Jewish life, performing chesed (charity) projects, visiting and receiving the blessings of prominent rabbis and Israeli leaders, designing their family albums, and participating in special Bar/Bat Mitzvah “tiyulim” (for example, to the Kotel). All together, these elements forge a unique “team spirit" with their other Bnai/Bnot Mitzvah classmates.
The Emunah Children’s Centre provides tallitot and tefillin for many of the Bar Mitzvah boys.
DO A MITZVAH AND PARTICIPATE IN OUR CHILDREN’S BAR/ BAT MITZVAH
• Twin your bar/ bat mitzvah with one of our children:
If you have a son, daughter, grandson, or granddaughter soon to celebrate their bar/ bat mitzvah, share your simcha with one of our wonderful Bnai/ Bnot mitzvah. You will receive a photo and information about one of our Bar/Bat mitzvah children, his or her interests, birthdate, etc. This is a fabulous opportunity for the children to be able to become pen pals, corresponding via email or social media. For our children, it reinforces that there are people who want to be in touch with them, want to get to know them and who care. For your children, it’s an opportunity to understand that there are Jewish children their own age who may be less fortunate and that their time, interest and friendship can make a big difference. We like to think of this as a unique opportunity where everyone benefits!
We invite you and your child to choose the Emunah Children’s Center as their Bar/Bat Mitzvah Tikkun Olam or Chesed Project and support one of our children’s personal dreams or their needs. We believe that there is no more powerful force in this world than children who work to help other children.
Finally, should you be planning to celebrate your child’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah in Israel, we invite you to celebrate at the Emunah Centre with one of our boys or girls. We would be pleased to tailor a special simcha event including interactive activities with the children, a festive meal, a mitzvah activity. and much more. Also, we would be very happy to bring your child’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah twin to celebrate with you at the Kotel (Western Wall), Masada, or wherever in Israel you have chosen to celebrate.
• Support our Bar/Bat Mitzvah Programme
Providing our children with the opportunity to celebrate their Bar/Bat Mitzvah with their families is a special privilege and a moving experience. We invite you to take part in this mitzvah by supporting this year’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah programme. The total cost of our annual celebration and the activities is $25,000 and only a small portion of these expenses is covered by local sponsors.
$1000 will enable one of our children to celebrate this year.
The following list details some of the items for which we’d appreciate your support (calculated according to an average sized group of 20 children):
• Outfits and shoes for children @ $136 per child = $2720
• 2 educational field trips (one for only the children and the second each with a parent) $1800 each = $3,600
• Festive banquet (400 guests including at 200 family members and 100 residential children) @ $10 per person = $4,000
• Gift package @$118 per child = $2360
• Tallit @$100

Partial or full support for any of these items will be greatly appreciated.
